The crash occurred at around 2:50 p.m., when the “City of New Orleans” train headed to New Orleans from Chicago slammed into an SUV that crossed the tracks as the train was about the pass. The train engineer sounded the horn as standard procedure when approaching railroad crossings, but the driver of the SUV drove across the tracks anyway. Both the driver and a passenger in the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene. None of the 62 passengers or 8 crew members on board the train were injured. An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
